This is a summary of how our school delivers music education to all our pupils across three areas – curriculum music, co-curricular provision and musical experiences – and what changes we are planning in future years. This information is to help pupils and parents or carers understand what our school offers and who we work with to support our pupils’ music education.
Part A: Curriculum music
This is about what we teach in lesson time, how much time is spent teaching music and any music qualifications or awards that pupils can achieve.
Our Music curriculum can be found at https://ravenswoodprimary.co.uk/Music-at-Ravenswood/
We have a beautiful dedicated space for music in school.
Part B: Extra-curricular music
This is about opportunities for pupils to sing and play music, outside of lesson time, including choirs, ensembles and bands, and how pupils can make progress in music beyond the core curriculum.
Ravenswood is lucky to have so many talented teachers who use their expertise and time to engage and enrich the children in opportunities for music beyond the classroom. These include:
· Trumpet Club for beginners
· The Ravenswood Band (for talented musicians)
· Key Stage 1 choir
· Key Stage 2 choir
· Close links with St Gabriel’s Church choir
Guitar and Drum lessons are offered in school time by Charlie Philp. Charlie is an outside provider and there is a cost for these lessons.
Part C: Musical experiences
This is about all the other musical events and opportunities that we organise, such as singing in assembly, concerts and shows, and trips to professional concerts.
· Weekly singing assemblies in KS1 and KS2.
· Musical Evening for families and friends
· Scottish Opera visit in Year 4
· Christmas shows
· “The Great Ravenswood Get-Together”, a summer concert performed with staff and pupils for Ravenswood families and friends
In the future
This is about what the school is planning for subsequent years.
· This year we are introducing whole class ukulele tuition for Years 5 and 6.
· Teachers across the school will be offered CPD tuition in ukulele.
· Year 2 will be taking part in an African Drumming session.
