Safer Streets

Earlier this week, I met with Councillor Lara Ellis of the Heaton Ward and Mark Largue, Principal Transport Planner for Newcastle, to discuss the effectiveness of the Safer Streets scheme. Mark noted that while traffic conditions have improved compared to previous years, a number of vehicles are still not adhering to the rules.

Over the years, various solutions have been considered, including converting the road into a one-way street. However, this proposal faced strong opposition during consultation and was not implemented.

To further enhance the scheme, the following actions are now being taken:

  • Refreshing road markings: Within the next month, school zone markings will be repainted to ensure clarity for all traffic.
  • Increased police presence: Lara is arranging a meeting with the police to discuss having officers present during Safer Streets hours.
  • Community awareness: Our school council will design reminder posters, which we plan to turn into banners to raise awareness.

Looking ahead, a longer-term proposal is being considered to install enforcement cameras that would issue fines to drivers who fail to comply with the scheme. These cameras have been successfully implemented at other school sites, leading to significant improvements.

Please remember to not use these roads between 8 -9am and 2:30 and 4pm to keep children’s journeys to and from school safe. If you would like more information or would like to get in touch with the council about this, please visit the website below:

Also – on the subject of safe school entry to pupils, some parents and taxi’s have been entering the school car park to drop children off in a morning. To make sure that the pedestrian pathways are safe, the caretaker has been closing the car park entrance. Please note the pedestrian gates will remain open for children coming into and out of school.

Robinwood

Our Year 5 children enjoyed a brilliant residential at Robinwood earlier this week. There are lots of photos to see on our Facebook and Instagram pages. Thank you to everyone involved in organising the trip and the staff that accompanied the children – it was especially nice to see Mr Maddison returning to join the children.

Eid Mubarak

The celebration of EID falls on Monday and we know that many religious families may be celebrating this day with their children. Please remember to notify school of this absence via the Ravenswood app or by calling the school office.

Past Presents

This week Year 3 children had a visit from the ‘past presents’ company to support their learning on the ancient Romans. The children loved battle training and gladiator sessions – there was even a gladiator battle between Mr Miller and Miss Wick – guess who was the victor?
