Ravenswood Primary School

Ravenswood Primary School

Week beginning 17th June 2024

What a lovely, busy week we have had in school.

To start with, we have to go back to last Friday, as this happened just after the blog was written. Year 2 were visited by Sarah Carr, a dentist, who told the children all about the importance of cleaning their teeth, as part of their PSHE topic on being healthy. Many thanks to Sarah for giving us some of her valuable time.

Over the last two weeks, Year 1 have been visiting Iris Brickfield to look at the forces linked to playground equipment. This is a great, child-focused link to their science topic and will help them next week in Design Technology, where they have to design and build their own. I will try to remember to share some of their creations.

On Monday, we welcomed Mrs Underwood back to Ravenswood, whose children all came here. She is the artist who helped us create our wall hangings. On this visit, she worked with Class 17 to create some smaller hangings that will be part of the Ouseburn Festival. The festival takes place on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th July and is always worth a visit.

Speaking of festivals, this Saturday is the Heaton Festival. This is always a great celebration of everything Heaton. I hope to see you there. For more details, check out heatonfestival.com

On Thursday, our friends from Zoo Lab visited Year 4 to help the children understand their science topic on Adaptation to Habitat. There were lots of incredible animals, including this rather large cockroach!

Thursday also saw the Drama Club’s performance of Macbeth at the People’s Theatre, as part of the Heaton Shakespeare Festival (Festivals everywhere at the moment!). The cast were amazing and have worked incredibly hard with Mr Chapman to put together this fabulous show. We shared the evening with Jesmond Park Academy and Hotspur Primary, who were equally incredible.

Special thanks to Mr Hood for his brilliant photos of the dress rehearsal.

On Friday, the Year 5/6 Quadkids team went with Mr Peggie to the regional finals. They are not yet back, so I will update you on how they did next week.

We have two very exciting Fridays coming up over the next two weeks.

On Friday 28th June, we would love to see all of our families for the ‘Great Get Together’ picnic on the school field. Gates will open at 1:10. There will be a performance by the school band and plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful weather that I have booked. The whole point of this event is to celebrate our diversity, so traditional costume and food would be amazing. See you there!

On Friday 5th July, The Friends of Ravenswood will be hosting the Summer Fair. At the end of school, we will release the children as usual and ask you to then re-enter school from either the main entrance or the car park entrance. All of the usual Summer Fair stalls will be available and it will be another chance to meet up as a community and enjoy time together. Again, I hope you can make it.
