Ravenswood Primary School

Ravenswood Primary School

Week beginning 18th March 2024

I feel like I have been in meetings all week, so apologies if you have been trying to catch me on the yard.

Thanks to everyone who came along to the In the Loop meeting on Friday morning. Julian Hughes gave us a very interesting update on keeping ourselves and our children safe online. He brought along the results of a recent survey of our Year 6 pupils. I wasn’t surprised about the access our pupils have to devices and social media, but what worried me was that 51% of them said that they had seen content online that they found upsetting and 41% of these children said that they did not tell a trusted adult about it. This is our key message to all pupils and we revisit it every half term. Julian’s key advice is to talk to your children about their internet use. Don’t be shocked or angry if they do tell you about things that they have seen, but work with them to protect them online. There are lots of great links in his parent update, which you can find under Parents - Helping at Home on the school website. One great addition to the Internet Matters website is something called Little Digital Helps Toolkit. Julian showed us that by filling in a short questionnaire, parents can get a helpful toolkit explaining all of the safety features available for their child’s devices. If you want to have a look at this, it is at the following link. https://www.internetmatters.org/little-digital-helps-toolkit/

The voting has now closed for the election of our new parent governors. The following three parents have been elected.

  • Emma Mullen
  • Chris Wooley
  • Gully Atwal-Churchley

Thanks to everyone who stood for this position. Governors play an important role in our school, as was demonstrated in November when they recruited Mr Anderson and met with Ofsted in the space of three days. They give up precious time to attend meetings and support the school in moving forward. It will be an exciting time to be on the governing body as Mr Anderson takes over.

The Friends of Ravenswood met on Thursday evening to plan for summer term. The big summer event is the School Summer Fair. This will take place after school on Friday 5th July, so please pop that date in your diaries. Any offers of help will be gratefully received.

Congratulations to Mr Miller and his wife on the arrival of their new baby girl, Juno. Mr Miller is now on paternity leave and will return after Easter. Class 10 are very lucky to have Miss Stewart taking them while Mr Miller is absent.

We are currently advertising for a new mid-day supervisor. If you are interested, you can find more details on the school website under Our School – Current Vacancies.

Father Jonathan joined Key Stage 1’s assembly on Tuesday and shared the Easter story with us. It is always lovely to have his visits and the children are always so calm and attentive for him.

Lots of teams have been out this week. Our boys’ football team beat RGS in the quarter final of the cup on Monday and will play Walkergate in the semi-final. Well done and good luck for the next round.

Mr Peggie took a team of Year 5 and 6 boys to RGS on Tuesday to play in a basketball competition. They played six games and won every one. Another fantastic result. Well done to everyone who took part.

On Thursday our Street Dance Team went to the Tyne and Wear Dance Festival at Whitley Bay Playhouse. This follows some great teaching by Clare McGrath from Jesmond Park Academy. She spent a term working with every Key Stage 2 class recently and the children had a great time. Our dance team were fantastic and represented the school brilliantly. Well done to them all.

On Thursday and Friday, we welcomed back the team from The Past Presents. On Thursday they worked with Year 3, giving them an interactive, informative and very enjoyable Roman Day. On Friday they worked with Year 4 on an equally exciting Mayan Day. We love having them in school and they help us to bring these history topics alive.

Finally, it is the last week of school next week. We break up at 3:30 on Thursday 28th March and return on Monday 15th April.
