Ravenswood Primary School

Ravenswood Primary School

Week beginning 23rd October 2023

I am going to start the last blog of the first half term with some public service announcements.

  • School closes on Friday 27th October and reopens on Tuesday 7th November. Have a great Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night.
  • The Friends of Ravenswood have asked me to share the date for the Winter Wonderland Fair, so you can get this in your diaries. It will be after school on Friday 1st December. We would love it if you could offer some help either at the fair or during the day to get things ready. Next half term we will be asking for donations for the fair. Any support would be gratefully received.
  • St Gabriel’s Church are holding a Family Fun and Food day on Thursday 2nd November from 10:30am – 1:30pm. Everyone is welcome to this free day of crafts, games and lunch for all the family.
  • Heaton Stannington are playing Crook Town in the Northern League 1 on Saturday 4th November, kicking off at 3pm. Children get in free if accompanied by an adult.

In school it has been a busy and very wet week with lots of visitors in the building, but thankfully no trips out.

On Tuesday, Father Jonathan came to do a Harvest Assembly with Key Stage 1, where he told the story of Alison Kay and why she set up The People’s Kitchen in Newcastle in 1985. This is a story close to our hearts, as Alison was a Heaton resident and a St Gabriel’s parishioner. Key Stage 2 got the Mr Maddison version of Harvest. Thank you to everyone who sent in food for The People’s Kitchen. This was collected on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, the school photographer came in to take the individual and family photos. Ordering has gone electronic. Your child will have brought a form home with them on the day. Simply scan the QR code or visit the website and you can order direct. The photographs will then come to school and we will get them to you.

You should have received your child’s Christmas card design this week. The Friends of Ravenswood organise this for the school and part of the money you spend goes to them so that they can support the school in providing the nice extras, which benefit all children.

We have had three days of visits from prospective applicants to be the next Headteacher at Ravenswood. They had a tour with Mrs Mason and one of our governors and were able to get a feel for the school. Applications will hopefully start pouring in over the half term holiday and governors will be interviewing candidates in late November. We will of course keep you informed.

On Friday, we had our second open day for Reception places in 2024-25. It is always lovely to show off our school. If you know of anyone interested in a Reception place for next year, please tell them about our open days. They can be booked through the main office. The closing date for Reception place applications is 15th January 2024.

Can I remind Year 6 parents that the closing date for secondary school applications is Tuesday 31st October, so please check that you have applied?
