Ravenswood Primary School

Ravenswood Primary School

Week beginning 3rd June 2024

I am a bit shocked that we have only been back a week; it has been very busy. I hope you all had a lovely half term break and are raring to go for the final half term of the year. There is lots planned and so we are hoping for some good weather to help it along.

Last half term finished with all of our Ouseburn Learning Trust teachers meeting at The Hancock Museum for some joint training. It was an interesting day and great to see all seven schools together. The work of the Trust is building back to what was ‘normal’ before Covid and there are exciting plans to continue this work next year and beyond.

Can I thank everyone for supporting The Book Fair earlier in the year? The school gets a percentage of the money taken and Miss Skillen was able to spend £1490 on new 'free reading' books for every class in Key Stage 2.

On Tuesday, staff from Jesmond Park Academy came to school to talk to our Year 6 and to meet with their teachers. This is all part of the important transition process to secondary school and Mr Campbell and his staff are making this a very positive experience. The vast majority of our Year 6 are heading to JPA in September.

Two teams represented Ravenswood in the Quadkids athletics competition this week. Y5/6 were out on Tuesday and Y3/4 were out on Wednesday. Quadkids is a great competition where children take part in sprint, long distance run, throw and jump events. They are awarded scores depending on their time or distance and all of these are added up for individual and team results. This takes time and so we haven’t received our placings yet. I will let you know.

Thursday was also a sporty day with Year 5’s orienteering team out in the morning and the Year 6 athletes out in the afternoon. The orienteering was a festival and not competitive and we placed third in the athletics competition, with some amazing individual placings.

Well done to all of our sporty children who are representing us at the moment. Year 4 orienteers are out on Monday along with some Year 5 girl cricketers.

On Wednesday, we had our final visit to Newcastle High School for Girls for the Year 5 Science is our Superpower session. The girls were crime scene investigators and had a great time. The sessions with NHSG have been excellent this year. We have been the first school to take Year 6 girls to a ‘Thinking Allowed’ set of workshops all about debate, which the girls really enjoyed. We look forward to continuing this link next year.

Speaking of next year, staff sat down together on Wednesday after school to plan trips, visits and visitors for 2024-25. We are trying to get all of these planned well in advance so that are well prepared and we can try to get a good deal on coach travel. The cost of coaches has increased substantially and the funding for schools has steadily decreased. Unfortunately, we will be having to ask for greater contributions to trips in the future.

Next Friday is non-uniform day to raise funds to put on the school fair. This allows the Friends of Ravenswood to buy the essentials to allow the fair to happen. The fair will take place straight after school on Friday 5th July.
